Harborne’s New Inn
Joule’s brewery is set to renovate Harborne’s New Inn Pub with Mainwood architects
-
The New Inn is an early 19th-century pub, stemming from the 1830 Beer Act that encouraged the rise of the public house. The building was likely converted from a merchant house and has undergone numerous changes over the years.
It still retains two of the original parlour rooms from its domestic days. These are to be restored by the Joules award winning Design team, to retain its current charm and homely feel.

The design has four main elements

Garden Design
Our primary focus has been to retain the current landscaping and enhance this, while funneling soung back into the space.
Covered Cloisters areas will absorb and direct sound back into the garden.
The raised planting area limits seating to create a spacious garden feel.
Bike storage within the garden will act as a buffer from nearby homes while promoting cycling.
The covered terrace by the bar will be 600mm lower to better muffle sound inside the building.
The garden has been designed with Matthew Clarke Associates for sound management.
Joule’s Brewery has achieved recognition by winning the National Pub Design Award six times. They have approached Mainwood Architects to design their flagship pub in Harborne
The pub sits on the outskirts of the Greenfield Road conservation area and sold to Joules Brewery in 2024. We were approached later that year after Joules Brewery had taken the time to get to know the locals and the area. Joule’s decided that the space needed to be increased, and remodelled whilst still maintaining its existing charm.
The planning application was submitted December 2024 and we await feedback from Birmingham city councils planning department
Event Space ‘Garden Room’
The proposal aims to create a flexible space for small gatherings of 35-40 people, enhancing the local pub's community role. It is suitable for clubs, family events, and Sunday lunches.
The design features a steel frame, reclaimed materials and stone floor. The new room contrasts with the original Victorian pub, maintaining a clear division, while connecting the bar, new room, and covered terrace for a cohesive flow.
The style is fitting for a public house. Carrying on the extension design along the front of Vivian Road. Whilst being more subservient to the rear of the building, as is the norm with many houses - back of house features.
Local Consultations
All neighbouring properties with visibility to the New Inn were invited to discuss the plans with Joules Brewery on the 16th of January 2025, with a full pub, the local area was well represented on the day.
